The
word “pharmacist” used to bring to mind the friendly neighborhood
druggist who filled our prescriptions and knew us by our first
names. Unfortunately, most of those neighborhood pharmacists
and pharmacies are gone. Many Senior Adults are taking medications
from their physician’s sample supply, mail-order pharmacies,
grocery stores and even health food stores.
Often
we do not receive the information, counseling and assistance
we need to properly take medications and watch for possible
side effects. This is especially true for those seniors seeing
multiple physicians or using more than one source for medications.
Years
ago it was mandated that every licensed nursing home in the
United States have a consultant pharmacist. But today, you
no longer have to live in a nursing home to benefit from your
own personal consultant pharmacist.
Senior
Care Consultant Pharmacists are helping consumers at home,
local senior centers, and in retirement homes such as independent
living and assisted living facilities.
As
Americans continue to live longer and Baby Boomers reach their
golden years, working with a pharmacist who has specialized
knowledge and training in aging and geriatrics is becoming
increasingly important.

As
we age we tend to take more medications and the risk of medication
related side effects increases.
What
makes Pharmacotherapy for Seniors so valuable is the personalized,
sensible way they serve their patients. Providing in-home consultations,
clients do not feel rushed and have the full attention of their
consultant pharmacist.
For
adult children of seniors, the consultant pharmacist is a trusted
advisor and family friend who oversees aging parents’ medication
regimens. Your personal consultant can inform you of your mother’s
new drug regimen, consult with you about a father’s sudden
melancholy, and ease fears about the uncertainties of caring
for parents.
